About Me

Dr. Hafied Gany was born in Watan Soppeng, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, on November 10, 1944. He started his professional career in the Water Resources Development and Management as a construction supervisor of water resources projects after completing his civil engineering undergraduate college in Bandung in 1967. From 1968 to 1981, Dr. Gany had a series of experiences working in the water resources design, construction, operation & maintenance and management of water resources infrastructures, as well as field research and experimental activities on the same disciplines and their related subjects.

In 1979, he obtained M.Sc. degree from the University Of Southampton, U.K. He was assigned as the project manager of the Construction Guidance Service Center - CGSC - Project, at the same time as chief of the Research Station for Hydraulic Structures of the Ministry of Public Works in Bekasi, West Java Province from 1985 to 1989.

In 1993 he obtained an interdisciplinary Ph.D. majoring Engineering, Socio-Economics, and Demography at the University of Manitoba, Canada, with commendation. Alumnus with commendation, of The Indonesian Supreme Civil Service's College (SPATI-II), National Institute of Civil Administration 1996-1997.

The highlight of his present position among others are; (1) Freelance Individual consultant in Irrigation and Water Resources, soon after retired (December 2009) as Senior Water Resources Development and Management Specialist Institute of Civil Services’ Training and Education, Ministry of Public Works, Republic of Indonesia; (2) Board of Director of International Network on Participatory Irrigation Management (INPIM) - a non profit organization previously based in Washington DC - at the same time as (3) the President of the Indonesian Chapter of INPIM (INPIM-INA); and (4) Vice President of the Indonesian National Committee of International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (INACID) for International Affairs; (International Member of History Working Group of ICID (HIST-WG). (5) As the Vice President of ICID (International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage) for the term of 2007-2010; And most recently, at the 60th IECM ICID in New Delhi, December 2009, as the Chairman of PCSPOA, Permanent Committee of Strategic Planning and Organizational Affairs) of ICID until 2011.

He has several ministerial and presidential awards: (1) Minister of Public Works, which is a 20-year honor for an outstanding services at the Ministry of Public Works in 1988; (2) Presidential Award for a 30-year outstanding services to the Government of Indonesia, August 1966; (3) Presidential Award for Outstanding Professional Achievement, December 1996; and Presidential Award for National Development Contribution, August 1999.

Dr. Gany has extensive experience as the lecturer at several public and private owned universities, and published more than 100 professional papers, eleven books, beside his experiences to attend international seminars, conferences and congresses in more than 30 countries over five continents.
